Recent Reels
It's been too long since the last Recent Reels and there have been many movies since. So let's run through them. I'm separating the gay ones out, because they constitute much of my Netflix renting. =)
Seen in Theatres
I am Legend - Now THIS was a good movie! I really enjoyed the alternative reality of it all, and the fact that it was based on the very real possibility that a strong virus could easily wipe out large populations. It was like this zombie movie set in a completely abandoned New York City. Who doesn't love that??
10,000 B.C. - I enjoyed this one a lot. Sure, there could have been more hot, shirtless men, but whatever, I still liked it. It's set in a completely prehistoric time, so of course there are many artistic liberties taken. That should go without saying. I can relate to reasons one might give for having them speak English: one, so that we can't watch and not read at least some of the time (Passion of the Christ) and two, to conjecture that their language was as complex as ours is today. I have to admit I was guessing throughout the whole movie where they might have been.
Never Back Down - In case you missed the previous post this one's worth seeing just for the glistening boys' muscles or at least get some screen-caps of Sean Faris.
Rentals
The Lake House - It's Speed 3 only there's lots of standing still going on, ...although there is a twist involving a moving bus. It was ok. Nothing to write into the future about.
Return to House on Haunted Hill - It was a interesting how they twisted the plot on the original storyline in order to get more people back in the house so it could kill them, but I don't think it was scarier than the mystery of the first movie. Still worth a rent, I suppose.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2 - Interesting show, lots of hacking of limbs, but I don't think a new and interesting 5 minute way to kill someone is worth 30 minutes of background information. To make it worse, the second half was disappointingly anticlimactic and not as good as the first.
To Kill A Mockingbird - Okay, I can see its social significance for its time, but it's a time that's past, I think. There are a couple of good moral stories told here. Maybe they should have shown it to me in elementary school, but isn't that what renting movies is for -- to catch up?
Blazing Saddles - Another completely silly Mel Gibson story where the actors on occasion talk to the camera and the plot line, as well as setting, absolutely disintegrates at the end. It's nothing in comparison with Spaceballs, but then again, that's a cult classic that I love.
Solaris - *zzzzz* huh? what? what happened? Oh, the movie's over already?! Geez, what a quiet, slow, boring movie filled in with some paranormal, pseudo-science crap in between. Put this one on if you're having trouble sleeping.
Vanilla Sky - OMFG I hate Tom Cruise anymore. This one was lame, too. Boy I really know how to pick 'em, don't I?
GLBT Movies
FAQs - What an awful show. Here's how it went: gay bashing, tranny, guns, lispy slut, straight guys, guns, more lispy gay boys being sluts, more guns, and then the straight boys (who don't even look that good) go gay....as a matter of fact, no one could really be described as "hot". Let's see, "how many tired old stereotypes can we throw in together? Oh, and let's add guns for no reason."
Long-Term Relationship - This was a decent one. I still don't get how he could be a R-- never mind if you're thinking about seeing this one; I won't spoil it. It's cute in its own way. Worth a rent.
Get Real - A gay coming-of-age movie about a high school dork falling for the star jock that turns out to be gay -- Every gay nerd's dream!
Food of Love - I really wanted to like this movie. It's got Chopin and lots of other great classical piano in it, but I still came away disappointed a little bit. (Few gay movies don't end in disappointment.) I just hate to see the kid give up on his dream. Still worth a rent.
Transamerica - I liked this one. I don't know how accurate it was to a real life M-to-F experience, but it was the story -her story- of facing a final surgery, telling her family, and the possibility of a son in her life. Definitely worth seeing.
She's the Man - This is one campy high school movie with one very sexy Channing Tatum staring in it as the hunky soccer player with whom the girl in the show is trying to hook up (while pretending to be a guy). This one's worth seeing just to see Channing shirtless all the time. I hesitate to even put this in the "Gay" section because it's more of a silly teenage movie, hell, even my southern baptist parents liked it so much dad burned a copy.

I'm a martial arts movie fanboy so I loved Kill Bill. However it isn't on a par with Crouching Tiger or even Kung Fu Hustle. IMHO, Tarantino movies tend to be over-stylized...but that's his schtick.
ReplyDeleteHe Who Must Be Obeyed and I haven't been out to the movies in ages but last week we saw Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. Miss Pettigrew is played by Frances McDormand (of Fargo fame).
I don't think it's in wide-release but it's outstanding, very much in the vein of Mrs. Henderson Presents (another great movie if you haven't seen it) although the two share no plot elements other than great texture.
I have 3 GLBT flicks on the shelf here awaiting viewing...just haven't gotten around to them yet. I'm addicted to them but so many of them are so lame. And yet I still rent them by the bucket...
Loved Kill Bill 1 and 2 though I admit #1 was better.
ReplyDeleteI do want to see "I am Legend" but I'll wait till it comes on DVD, as per usual.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" - all I remember is watching that movie back in my junior high school days (and thats quite awhile ago - lol) and enjoying it. Course that doesn't mean that much since most of the crap they forced us to watch back then stunk!
