New Car

Ok, I'm in dire gays (get it?) for a new car. Right now I've got a 1995 S-10 Chevy pickup truck. I know, me in a pick-up truck. Can you imagine? It's falling apart all over the place, and granted it's probably all because of me, but I take care of it to the best of my knowledge. It's got just over 160,000 miles on it, and the expenses for it are becoming more and more like paying a loan off for a new one. So, it's time to get a new one.

My requirements are:

  • a car (no truck, no SUVs)

  • 30+ mpg highway

  • around $20,000 or so

  • automatic transmission

  • some "umph"

  • something slightly sporty

  • something I'll be able to find in the parking lot (a.k.a. not something that you see every third car on the road like a Corolla or Accord)

I'm taking any and all suggestions into consideration. Lay 'em on me!

  1. if you want a new-new car, the Mazda3 is a great choice. great fun to drive, not as common as civics or jettas, and for 20k-ish, you can get one with all sorts of neat gadgets.

if you're amenable to a used-new car, you have a world of great options in that price range. BMW 3-series (that budget will have you looking at a 2003-2004 with lower miles) is a bit common, but there's a reason -- they're great cars to drive, as well as being quite comfy and well screwed together.

if you really don't want another one in the parking lot, there are great arguments to be made for 2-year-old Saabs (9-3 or 9-5).

of course, '99-'01 Porsche Boxters also can be had for that money. :)

  2. Ugh...I'm in the market for a car myself. They all look like sneakers.

I've wanted a Jeep Wrangler for ages but I just can't justify getting a "car" that gets 20 MPG Highway on a good day.

Oh, and I have about 1/2 the budget you do.

    Good luck with your hunt.

  3. I would say the Prius - but that car is all over the place now. Not that that is a bad thing mind you.

I'm hoping to one day get the CHEVY VOLT Looks like a great idea of never having to use gas at all if you travel less than 40 miles a day.
